Interventions and projects
Community Driving Schools.
These were the idea of local PC Ian Hanson and Chevin's Glenn Burton as a response to disaffection of young people in the village of Fitzwilliam Nr Pontefract. The project involves offering trainees 25 hrs driving training and two attempts each at the theory and practical tests with the proviso that they attend regularly and are of good conduct throughout. So far 151 young people aged 17 - 25 have been helped into either employment or training and some have made the step into self-employment. Schemes have run in the following areas : Harrogate, Easingwold, Hemsworth Nr Pontefract, Fitzwilliam, and Chapeltown in Leeds.
The idea has also been used to support three young people training on our 'Youthbuild' programme at Ings Estate, East Hull. Interviews have recently taken place at Ings Estate for three further young people to be given the opportunity. All the schemes are mananged by a local residents steering group.
Youthbuild
We are working with a number of agencies in Hull and previously in Chapeltown in Leeds to establish city wide Youthbuild projects. The projects aim to provide construction based training places for "socially excluded" young people aged between 16 and 24 years. The training placements are provided direct through our capital investment schemes in the area.
Youth Activities and Sport Clubs
Of course youth activities and sports provide an attractive diversion for young people and we have supported several intiatives including;
- Chapeltown Wildcats Jnrs American Football Team,
- junior swimming clubs,
- assisting with the setting up of Hemsworth Welfare Jnr FC who became English FA Jnr Club of the Year for 2004 and will soon move into their new £600,000 training centre.
- Fitzwilliam Youth Project that provides a range of activities for local young people.
- kit sponsor of Preston Rd Rangers Jnr FC in Hull after they had searched in vain for a sponsor for some time.
Community Associations
We have provided on-going support to groups of all sizes whose aims vary from simply attending social meetings to being part of formal regeneration partnerships.
- South Kirkby Community Association is led by Chevin Tenant Board Member Peter Buttree. The group has use of a Chevin property for social events and meetings as a focal point for the area. Glenn Burton has worked with the group to prepare a bid for a new build centre on derelict land.
- Brayton Parochial Church Council have been given support to draw up plans for a replacement community building in this rapidly expanding village near Selby where many of our residents live.
- Driffield Residents Asssociation is a new group led by residents of our scheme at Riverside Close. The residents want develop improved opportunities for activities for the families on the estate. Members of the group attended Child Protection training.
- Fitzwilliam & Kinsley Community Forum. This group have been supported by us for several years and have developed to the point where they are leading the multi-agency redevelopment of the demolished 'City' estate. The group have many successes to their credit including creating a Country Park, a Heritage Project, a volunteer Youth Club and they were the subject of a Yorkshire TV programme this year with historian Ian Clayton.
