Community Driving Projects
Since 2000, as part of Chevin Housing Group's investment in its communities and to support residents into work or training, Chevin has co-ordinated several community driving projects. The model is based around car driving skills and so far 151 young people aged 17-25 have taken part.
Alex - our first trainee - came from Fitzwilliam village near Pontefract, West Yorkshire and obtained his first job at TESCOs a few weeks after his training started because he was able to use his new skills to train as a fork lift driver. Emily of Ings Estate, East Hull is our newest trainee (December 2007) and works at Castle Hill Hospital. She currently catches four buses a day travelling between work and looking after her young family, so driving skills will help a great deal.
Driving School partnerships have been developed in Fitzwilliam near Pontefract; Easingwold, near York; Preston Road estate, Hull; Ings estate, Hull; Harrogate; Hemsworth near Pontefract and Chapeltown, Leeds.
The partnerships have all had membership from the local community, local Police, and other Registered Social Landlords. Our latest development for the project is in Chapeltown, Leeds where former trainees are helping to manage the latest intake of young people.
